Celebrating its 40th Anniversary, the Virginia Pony Breeders Association’s 2022 Yearling Futurity was held at the Upperville Colt & Horse Show on Sunday, June 12. Twelve yearlings—four colts and eight fillies—competed for prestige and prize money. A total of $4,626 was derived from Nomination payments and matching VPBA monies to be paid to the top eight breeders and top six owners (if available) in each section.
Speak Easy, handled by breeder Oliver Brown, of Reva, Virginia, for owner Melinda Snyder, of Tiverton, Rhode Island, won his section over three other colt/geldings and went on to be named Grand Champion by judge Peg Seals. The flashy chestnut gelding is sired by *Telynau Royal Anthem (Welsh) x Final Say (Welsh crossbred) by *Menai Mister Mostyn.
The top yearling in the Filly section was Shenandoah Caramel, a purebred Welsh daughter of Farnley Triton x Shenandoah Praline by Arlen Royal Banner. The chestnut bested seven other fillies and went on to earn the Reserve Grand Champion title. Holding the reins for her mother, breeder Hetty M-S. Abeles, of White Post, Virginia, was Damaris Abeles who was named top Junior/Amateur-Owner Handler.
