Meet Julie! Julie Winkel, along with Tricia Booker, is one of the co-authors of Judging Hunters & Equitation WTF: Want the Facts. Julie owns Maplewood Stables in Reno, NV, and is a USHJA certified trainer, clinician, and judge. She also holds her USEF ‘R’ Jumper, ‘R’ Hunter/Hunt Seat Equitation, and ‘R’ Hunter Breeding judge’s cards.
“I love to teach, and I love to teach people about our sport,” Julie commented. “I am very passionate about education. I was the co-chair of the USEF Licensed Officials Committee for about ten years, and during that time helped with the continuing education programs for judges.”
“I wanted to communicate this knowledge with competitors as well as their trainers and even their parents,” she said. “Tricia and I started talking about writing a book from a judge’s perspective. There is a structure for scoring hunters and equitation, and we wrote this book so that people could better understand that structure.” Julie sees an incredible amount of value in sharing this information beyond only licensed officials.
She looks forward to continuing to spread education. “We are excited about getting the book into the equestrian programs at colleges, and we have also developed a workbook to be able to give barns and organizations,” she added. “We are also launching an eBook in March that will be available online through Barnes & Noble.”
